Safe Water Project

Mutanda Girls' High School, home to 286 students, once relied on rationed rainwater — and spent Ksh. 240,000 per term trucking in extra supply from 20 km away.

Since connecting to a reliable water source, the results have been remarkable: improved hygiene, a beautification project of 220 flowers planted by students, and a measurable jump in academic performance.

For years, many families in Mutyambua struggled to access safe and reliable water, affecting households, schools, healthcare services and local businesses.

Today, that reality has changed with the commissioning of a new solar-powered safe water project that will provide clean water to more than 3,600 people, including schools, a health facility and the local marketplace.

Funded by Procter & Gamble (P&G), implemented by the Africa Initiative for Rural Development (AiRD) in partnership with Water Mission, the project delivers a sustainable and climate-friendly solution that will improve health, enhance hygiene, save time previously spent collecting water and support livelihoods across the community.

The commissioning ceremony brought together community members, local leaders, and partners to celebrate a milestone that reflects the power of collaboration. Together, P&G, Water Mission, and AiRD are helping ensure that safe water is not just a necessity but a foundation for healthier, more resilient communities.
